Understanding Counselling and Psychotherapy

Counselling and psychotherapy are “talking therapies” that offer a safe space for clients in distress to discuss their problems with a professional helper. Through listening and collaboration, the goal is to help clients find a better path forward. Both counselling and psychotherapy aim to provide support during times of crisis or change, allowing clients to explore, discover, and clarify ways to live more resourcefully. People seek these services for various reasons, including stress, anxiety, bereavement, addiction, and relationship issues.

Difference Between Counselling and Psychotherapy

Although counselling and psychotherapy overlap considerably, with the terms often used interchangeably, there are some distinctions between the two practices. Counselling typically focuses on immediate issues that have arisen recently, such as bereavement or relationship breakdown. On the other hand, psychotherapy tends to address deeper, long-term issues rooted in the past, like trauma or ongoing effects of mistreatment. However, the primary objective of both counselling and psychotherapy remains the same: providing professional assistance to help individuals overcome personal challenges and improve their
well-being.
